The Fair Day
Carrigaline was a market town in the twelfth century and being a focal points of many roads continued to attract producers of agricultural produce. Fairs date back to the nineteenth century when the fair at Carrigaline attracted sellers and buyers from all over the south of Ireland. The fair continued until the fifties but by then people clogging the main street of towns was becoming a little unpopular and this was succeeded in the sixties by the mart system. The Carrigaline mart was situated where the 4home store now stands. The Agricultural co-operative system became popular amongst farmers in the early part of the last century. Most areas originally had independent co-ops but eventually these began to amalgamate creating bigger enterprises. The premises of Carrigaline Co-op was located in the area in front of the Stable bar near the old Extravision premises now being re-developed. Carrigaline co-op amalgamated with Ballyclough in the seventies.
