Carrigaline Castle

Carrigaline (Charraig Uí Leighin in Gaelic), means "Rock of Lyons". The rock here refers to a nearby outcrop of rock where a Norman settler, Philip de Prendergast built a castle in 1171. Naming it Beauvoir (Pleasant View) its ruins: consisting mostly of a typical Norman Tower still sit pearched on that high limestone bluff situated about a mile outside the present town centre, just left, past the Church of Ireland . The area (known as "The Rock') was once itself the town centre of an early version of Carrigaline town. It is also known locally as Cogans Castle. See also our History section for more details.
